If you find that your child has worked solidly for 30 minutes, is not finished and wishes to stop (or if they have other things to do), please just write a note in their assignment book and I can help them complete their work during a break or lunch recess the next day. I appreciate your help!
  • Tomorrow is All Saints' Day! The celebration will start at 2 p.m. in the gym. Parents are welcome to come help their children get ready starting at 12:45. Don't worry if you are unable to come, I am happy to assist the students as needed.

Special Thanks/Five-Pocket Folders

I just wanted to let you parents know how much I appreciate your support with your child's education. There are certain moments as a teacher when you can identify tangible social and academic growth within your students, and this week has been full of those moments. Thank you for your support in preparing your child and their materials for school. Thank you for encouraging them to complete their homework to the best of their ability. Thank you for providing them with English books to capture their imagination and help their decoding skills and fluency grow by leaps and bounds. Thank you for your kind words and helpful suggestions! I am blessed to have your support. Please know that I am here and eager to continue listening to your thoughts and concerns about your child's education.

Five-Pocket Folders

Please let me know in the assignment book whenever you would like your child to bring home their five-pocket folder. Inside you will be able to check out their worksheets and quizzes.

    Monday, 20 October 2014

    Monday, October 20th, 2014

It was a pleasure to see and chat with many of you last Friday! Thank you for your helpful comments and suggestions. Your feedback is invaluable when it comes to improving the class environment and my lesson plans! I hope that you feel a greater ease to come to me with future feedback.

As suggested by a few parents on Friday, I have scaffolded the students' homework for Monday (their reading response journals.) Rather than writing 6-8 sentences in their language notebook, the students can instead choose to fill out a worksheet that asks about specific story elements (setting, characters, problem/solution, beginning/middle/end, etc.) These worksheets will be an option until all of the students are gradually able to disseminate the most important information in a story and write a summary about it.

The students will also be given an additional daily math worksheet to either help them review what they have learned in class, or to challenge them with different exercises.

Since a few students have had trouble remembering instructions for how to do their homework once they get home, I will review what they need to do twice in class, once at four o'clock, so that it is fresh in their minds!

I would like to welcome our new student, Katie! She is joining DISK after spending some time in America with her family. I am proud of the grade two students for welcoming Katie and helping her to feel comfortable in her class.

Marianne and Wilsoni show Katie how to use the counters in math class.

    Tonight's homework:
    • Reading Response Journal (either the worksheet OR 6-8 sentences and a picture in your language notebook)
    • Complete Math Worksheet 1.5-1.6 (two-sided worksheet)
Next week's spelling words (for Monday, October 27th) will come from Communities pg. 42-43:

    1. government
    2. law
    3. tax
    4. patriotism
    5. vote
    6. pride
    7. services

I have assigned no homework for the weekend, and the students will not have a spelling quiz next Monday.  I will have the exams marked and handed back next week, so that we will be able to review anything that the students had trouble with. Please have a beautiful 10-10 weekend!
