Today was a busy day in the second grade! In reading and phonics, we practiced hard and soft c and g. We continued to work on our drafts in language and spelling. We created and reviewed number lines in math. In science, we reviewed our eight inquiry skills and took a quiz. Finally, the students had their elective  after working on a project that we started in art yesterday.

We will have our second spelling quiz on Monday. A few of the parents have just recently requested that I post the students' spelling words a week in advance. I will do this starting next Monday, September 1st.

I hope that you have all have a wonderful and well-deserved weekend!

Tonight's homework:
  • Write spelling words (stuck, remembered, cousins, porch, piano, visit, crown, spend)
  • Complete Journeys Workbook pg. 7-8. Some of the students finished this work in class!

We reviewed the class rules today so that they are fresh in the minds of the second grade students. The students were reminded that deportment is 10% of their grade. This led into a good discussion about how DISK is not only the place where we come to learn academic subjects, but it where we come to learn how to be good and happy people who learn to work and live together. I am grateful for your support!

The students reviewed the eight inquiry skills again today. I believe that they are ready for tomorrow's quiz, but would benefit from reviewing the skills listed in their science notebook a bit more at home.

Tonight's homework:
  • Complete Math Practice 1.4
  • Review for science test (Eight Inquiry Skills)

The students have finished their prewriting exercises and have now started drafting in their language and spelling class. Their writing is in their language notebook if you wish to see what your child accomplished today. Thank you to all of the parents who assisted their child with the prewriting exercise.

Tomorrow we will have the first mass of the year. The students have practiced a variety of songs. I look forward to watching them participate in this sacred Catholic ritual.

We will also have art class tomorrow. The students are encouraged to bring in a smock or paint shirt if you desire to keep their clothes free of any art materials. Thank you!

I am impressed with many of the students' poster-creating skills! We went over the criteria for what makes a good poster: title, large and tidy printing, colorful and "eye-catching." I appreciate the hard work that the students put into their homework (and for you, their parents, for assisting them.)

As discussed at Saturday's meeting, I have directed the students to write all of their language arts-related notes (spelling, reading, phonics, language) in their language notebook. All of their social studies notes are to be written in their social studies notebook and all of the science notes are to be written in their science notebook. They also have a Christian Living notebook as well. All four of the notebooks have been labeled, and I will encourage the students to check to make sure they are writing in the correct notebook. Apart from Christian Living, I will be checking these notebooks on a regular basis, correcting and providing feedback as needed.

The students began prewriting in their language and spelling class. We are going to go through all of the stages of writing in the next two weeks. The topic for our first paragraph is "Family." Some of the students need a bit of assistance to complete their prewriting task (ex: how to write Dad's job title in English.) If you are able to help them fill in the gaps, I would greatly appreciate it. Their prewriting is in their language notebook. Once we complete this prewriting task, we will begin drafting. I am confident that every student will be able to write an excellent paragraph by following the writing stages!

Monday, August 25th, 2014

I have stapled my biography and the syllabi into the assignment books of students whose parents were unable to attend Saturday's meeting. Please let me know if you have any questions.

We had our first spelling quiz today! The students were very good at not talking or taking peeks at their neighbor's paper. I will write down the score in their assignment book every Monday, and any words that they need to write as practice.

Tonight's homework: Complete speaking OR viewing OR listening tips poster using your English book. Be ready to share your poster with the class tomorrow!

Curriculum Map for 2014-2015

At the parent teacher orientation, many of you requested a copy of the rough outline I have for which units the students will be studying for this coming school year. I have attached an outline, as well as a summary of each of the the core subjects. Please understand that this is a rough draft, and will be altered and adjusted according to the students' needs and interests, as well as due to time constraints.

Language and Spelling

Reading and Phonics

The goal of language arts is to help develop strong readers, writers, communicators and thinkers among the students. Literacy skills are the cornerstone to learning in all of the content areas, thus a great priority has been placed on helping the students develop their phonetic knowledge, decoding skills, fluency and prosody.  The second grade English language arts curriculum continues to expand the foundation of literacy through each of the language arts.  In reading, children decode unknown polysyllabic words through phonetic and structural analysis, as well as by monitoring their own reading.  In oral reading, they work on fluency by phrasing accurately, reading with an understanding of punctuation, and reading at an appropriate rate with a smooth flow.  In writing, children create simple stories, personal narratives, and research reports that utilize compare and contrast or cause and effect organizational patterns.  They compose second drafts using appropriate grammar and spelling conventions, and they employ appropriate steps of the writing process.  Through listening, speaking, and viewing, the children retell a story heard or viewed in class, capturing major story events, main ideas, and supporting ideas; conduct a brief interview; and give a news report. Through the use of narrative and expository texts from our common culture and other cultures around the world, second graders explore a variety of topics in the units of study.
Math

The second-grade math curriculum builds on the foundations developed in the previous grade. The construction of mathematical knowledge continues through the use of concrete manipulative materials and problem-solving discoveries. Students acquire knowledge and skills and develop an understanding of Mathematics from their own experience. This means that students will be provided with a wide range of varied meaningful experiences through applying math in real life contexts and situations, where children will become actively involved in learning. In this way, students will be gradually aided in gaining understanding of the abstract and symbolic. Throughout this course, students will work individually and in groups with an emphasis on the importance of communication, mathematical risk-taking, and the value of diverse approaches to solving problems.  The students will spend this semester focusing on addition, subtraction, grouping and fractions. We will spend the winter and spring quarters learning about time, the calendar, multiplication, measurement and finally, moving on to three-digit numbers.
Science

Learning is an active process resulting from hands and minds on explorations in which learners construct their own knowledge. Students have an opportunity to learn at their own and explore the world. Teachers find out what students know, and use literature, photographs, real objects, a demonstration, or a “hands-on” activity to introduce a concept, and to set up a problem to be explored. All facets of learning will be built and reinforced upon the experiences provided by the activity. At the end, students will apply their new understanding to real-world examples as teachers help students see science as part of technology, society, personal experience and life in general. A primary goal is for the students to develop understandings of science concepts that endure well past the next year. These understandings are nurtured through the identification and discussion of the "big ideas" and essential questions of science. The students will commence with a unit on how to think like a scientist by improving their inquiry skills. They will then progress on to units on life science, earth science and physical science.

 Social Studies

Social studies in the second grade will help the students understand the course in a wider scope; it includes history (the stories of our past), economics (the way we meet our needs), geography (how and where we live), citizenship (the ways we interact in our society), and culture (the ways people express themselves). With an emphasis on map skills, they study the geography of the community, its connections to neighboring communities and the world beyond. They begin to explore how people make a living in their local community and how goods and services move in and out of the local area and internationally as well.  In this course, students will reinforce the map skills they have learned in the previous grade and will be introduced to other skills (like reading different kinds of graphs, diagram, identifying boundaries, how to use the ruler properly, using a map scale to find out the distance between places) wherein other subject areas (especially math) will be integrated. Furthermore, students will realize that every situation has been an effect or the cause of another situation, and how they affect the lives of people of different communities. Thus, the goal of this course is to let students appreciate and respect the different people, places and cultures of the world.

My Biography

It was great to be able to see so many of you attend our parent teacher orientation. To those who were unable to attend, I am available to chat with by appointment with Ms. Lee. For those who were unable to attend, below is my biography:

Greetings! I will be the grade two teacher for the 2014-2015 school year. I have my undergraduate degree in journalism from Campbell University, my elementary teaching certification through the state of New Jersey, my master’s in international education through The College of New Jersey and a Cambridge young learners certification. I have lived in Taiwan for several years, and take great pleasure in educating young students from Taiwan and abroad.

I consider myself both a teacher and a student. I love to capture students' attention through challenging and engaging lessons, but I am always eager to absorb new information as well.

My pedagogical philosophy is based on the premise that the teacher is a facilitator of learning, rather than a dispenser of knowledge. In order for students to be fully engaged in the day's lessons, it is imperative that they are actively involved with what they are learning.  I believe that children do not all learn the same way or at the same rate, and that it is my role as an educator to differentiate my instruction so that each child is able to reach their full potential in a safe, caring environment. I strive to be vigilant to maintain an ongoing awareness of what the students know, what they are interested in learning, how they best learn, and how to use this information to best reach each learner.

I believe that education’s primary purpose is not for students to acquire a myriad of facts, but rather to help students gain critical thinking skills so that they are capable of connecting new ideas with what they already understand about the world. Students do not easily retain newfound knowledge simply by being able to repeat facts. Deep understanding is created when students are able to apply new ideas to real-world problems so that they are able to create solutions. Learning new ideas and application must be viewed as irrevocably bound in order to provide students with an optimal learning experience.

As a fellow learner, I endeavor to find connections between myself and my students, what they are learning and what is happening outside of the classroom. It is my goal that my students view me as a well-informed collaborator rather than an omniscient instructor. In order to encourage this viewpoint, respect for self and others is viewed as one of the greatest virtues in my classroom. It is my goal for my students to understand that learning can come from anyone and anywhere, and that everyone they encounter should be given equal respect and autonomy for their ideas and opinions.

I am excited to work with the parents and guardians of my students, so that together we are able to best meet the needs of your child. I welcome any and all feedback that you have about what is happening in the grade two classroom.

End of the Second Week

We will be having our first parent teacher meeting of the year tomorrow from 9-11 a.m. I have already received many forms back from the students reporting that many of you will be attending. I look forward to chatting with you about what your child has been doing and what I hope for them to learn this coming year. If you are unable to attend tomorrow's meeting, I hope that I will be able to see you soon.

Read all about it!

Tonight's homework:  Write eight sentences using your spelling words (curly, straight, floppy, row, collars, stood, weighed, drooled.) There will be a spelling quiz on Monday.

Thursday, August 21st, 2014

Today the second grade received their first "Good Day Monster!" That means that all of the students worked hard to take turns speaking, respecting one another, and keeping on task today. When the students receive 10 "Good Day Monsters," they will be able to choose their seats for the day, I will bake us a special treat, and we will have a very fun activity. I love to reward good behavior, and am excited to see an improvement in classroom deportment since the first day.

I have the elective forms from every student. The administration is busy collating the information and forming the elective rosters now. I will inform the students of their activity in class tomorrow. I hope that your child will enjoy their selected elective!

Sister Loida will be holding catechism class on Fridays during our independent study period. The students are invited to join.

Note: We always have our music class on Thursday afternoon. Several of the students forgot to bring their recorder and music folders. Like P.E. uniforms, if they don't have their recorders, the students are unable to participate for the day. I would like to encourage the students to remember to pack their recorders on Wednesday night. I will remind them on Wednesday, as well.

I am pleased to be able to lead the art lessons with your child this year. Below are some pictures that I took today of the students recreating Kandinsky's "Color Study: Squares with Concentric Circles." I apologize for not requesting the students to bring painting clothes in advance. If there are any water color stains on their clothes from today, it should come out quite easily with a bit of soap and water. I will remind the students to bring painting clothes if they wish to protect their uniform during certain art activities. As you can see, their creations are beautiful!

Tonight's homework: Complete Math Practice 1.2-1.3

Wednesday, 20 August 2014

Wednesday, August 20th, 2014

We are going to begin our electives this Friday! If your child hasn't already given me the paper with his or her top three preferences, please be sure to give it to me by tomorrow. The students will be able to choose a new elective for every term. I encourage the students to try something new that sounds interesting!

The elective forms were stapled into the students' assignment books on Tuesday, along with a participation form for this Saturday's parent and teacher orientation morning (from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.). If you haven't already, please have your child return the form to me by Thursday, as well.

Tonight's homework: In your classroom notebook, write five sentences about your five senses. Example: I like to taste new food with my mom. Can you smell something delicious? I'm sorry, I can't hear you. My new bed feels so soft! Can you see the beautiful rainbow in the sky?

Today was our first visit to the library this school year. The students' library cards are not ready yet, but will be ready soon. Until they are, the students are still able to check out two books at a time. Mrs. Lui will mark down the names of who borrowed which book. I was delighted to see so many excited readers at the library!
