Monday, August 31st, 2015

Today in the second grade, we:
  • listened to campaign speeches from the upper elementary students who are running for student council during assembly
  • took our weekly spelling quiz, wrote a short journal entry on a celebration and continued to identify and pronounce hard and soft c and g sounds in reading and phonics class
  • worked with today's number (9), reviewed doubles facts and doubles plus or minus one facts in math class
  • voted for the treasurer, vice president, and secretary in student council and created a map key with map symbols for DISK in social studies class
  • chose our class poem and song for the month of September during ECA
Tonight's Homework:
  • Complete the book report on "My Family" from Journeys pg. 39-52 and check the rubric (in your child's assignment book.) 
  • Read aloud for 15 minutes and have a parent sign your reading log. I recommend they read "My Family" from Journeys before they start their book report!
    The reading log is a new piece of nightly homework, where the students are encouraged to read aloud to their parent (or another family member) for at least 15 minutes nightly. Your child has brought home a reading log, which includes a list of comprehension questions that you can ask your child after they read to you, as well as information about this new homework assignment. After your child has read, please sign the reading log, and I will check it each morning. Thank you!

    Today in the second grade, we:
    • performed our August poem and reviewed hard and soft c and g sounds in reading and phonics class
    • worked with today's number (8) and practiced with addends, doubles facts, doubles-plus-one-facts in math class
    • reviewed our weekly target vocabulary, practiced our class song, took turns sharing about our families during our weekly sharing time, and continued our handwriting unit in language and spelling class
    • reviewed measuring tools and compared the current temperature of cities around the world in science class
    Congratulations to Fiona, Sophie and Mickey who won awards for their awesome typing in computer class!

    Sophie told us about her four brothers during sharing time. Thanks to Ann and Ms. Johnson for sharing a pizza snack with us!

    Rainy days + no outdoor recess = (Just) Dance Party!











    Tonight's Homework:
    • Complete Journeys Practice Book pg. 9-10.
    • Complete the Think-Tac-Toe (in your child's assignment book.) The students are directed to choose three activities from the sheet. You can sign each activity they complete. All written work should be shown in your child's language notebook

    • Prepare for next Monday's (August 31st) spelling quiz: number line, before, after, less, more, greater than, fewer, less than, estimate, answer (from Math unit 1, chapter 1 pg. 11-17.)

    Today in the second grade, we:
    • practiced writing appropriate subjects to match provided predicates and continued our unit on handwriting in language and spelling class
    • echo read "All in the Family" and compared our own families to Camila's family in preparation for tomorrow's sharing time in reading and phonics class
    • worked with today's number (7) and practiced counting on a number line to find a sum in math class
    • discussed the difference between a city and state in social studies class
    • continued our unit on measurement by measuring weight with a scale, as well as comparing the temperature of the different U.S. and Taiwanese cities in science class
    • attended an assembly conducted by Sister Heart during ECA
    The students worked on a Venn Diagram comparing their own families with Camila's family (from the story "All in the Family" from our Journeys book)

    Thanks to Sophie's dad for sharing some delicious Ritter Sport chocolate brought back from his travels!
    Tonight's Homework:
    • Complete Math Practice 1.5-2.1.
    • Prepare for tomorrow's sharing time (Topic: My Family) by practicing in front of your family.

    Today in the second grade, we:
    • separated the subject from the predicate in a variety of sentences and continued our unit on handwriting unit in language and spelling class
    • worked with today's number (6) and started our new chapter on addition in math class
    • compared and contrasted cities with suburbs in social studies class
    • continued learning about measuring tools by measuring and comparing each others' height in science class
    • made personalized bookmarks and got to know our G1 neighbor, Ms. Lopez during ECA

    Today in the second grade, we:
    • previewed next week's spelling words, listened to and discussed "All in the Family" from Journeys, and practiced adding details to our writing in reading and phonics class
    • focused on the subject, or naming parts of sentences, and continued our unit on handwriting in language and spelling class
    • worked with today's number (7), took our unit 1, chapter 1 quiz in math, and previewed our next unit on addition in math class
    • reviewed the eight inquiry skills and practiced measuring various objects using rulers and measuring cups in science class
    • practiced our class song and poem, and practiced borrowing books from the class library during ECA 


    The G2 students are working hard on having lovely printing.

    Tonight's Homework:

    Complete Social Studies Activity Book pg. 4-5.

    Special Notes:
    • Tomorrow the students will have P.E., so they should come dressed in their P.E. uniform, with a spare DISK approved P.E. shirt to change into after class. The students have had P.E. on some particularly sunny days, so I welcome you to send a cap along with your children that they can wear during P.E. class in order to provide protection from the sun. Thank you!
    • We will begin our dance class next Friday, September 4th after P.E. class! The teachers of DISK have worked hard to coordinate this dance class, as we firmly believe in the benefit that dance brings to the students in terms of coordination, agility, balance, and teamwork. Because dance will be scheduled during math class on Friday, we will have a double math period on Thursdays.
    • The school will be spraying for mosquitoes this Friday, August 28th at 4:00 due to the recent outbreak of dengue fever. Please pick up your child promptly this Friday, as the company wishes to start spraying the grounds at 4:00. Thank you!

    If your child has extra time and wants to review his math skills or challenge him or herself, you can log onto: Math Blaster, where the students can practice what they are learning in class. You have to sign up for an account with a working email address.

    Today in the second grade, we:
    • learned about the year of jubilee in assembly
    • took our weekly spelling quiz and  continued to work with hard and soft c and g in reading and phonics class
    • worked with today's number (24) and prepared for tomorrow's quiz in math class
    • explored examples of different neighborhoods and made a map of DISK in social studies class
    • practiced our latest class poem and listened to our class song for August in ECA
    Tonight's Homework:
    • Complete the reading response on "Measuring" and check the rubric (in your child's assignment book.) 
    • Study for tomorrow's math quiz on unit 1, chapter 1.

    • A new art competition for the school Houses has been announced. Students may participate by drawing possible images for their House according to their symbols. The winners will have their drawing chosen to represent their House!
    •  The topic for this Friday's sharing time will be "family." The students will have one minute to share information about their family. We will brainstorm ideas in class and create an outline of what they can talk about. They are encouraged to practice in front of you!

    Today in the second grade, we:
    • worked with hard and soft c and g sounds in reading and phonics class
    • worked with today's number (21), reviewed chapter one in preparation for next Tuesday's quiz, and completed an "About Me" math activity in math class
    • reviewed our weekly target vocabulary, practiced our class poem and song, took turns sharing about a place we've visited during our weekly sharing time, and continued our handwriting unit in language and spelling class
    • practiced measuring height, width, and length in science class

    • The students have P.E. every Wednesday and Friday and are instructed to come to school in their P.E. uniforms. If they don't have their P.E. uniform on P.E. days, they unfortunately can't participate.
    • We will have an open house tomorrow, Saturday 22nd. You are welcome to come by at or after 8:30 a.m., when you will have the chance to meet me until 9:30, the subject teachers until 10:15, after which there will be a presentation in the gym until 11 a.m. If there is inclement weather and the open house is canceled, I will let you know through Dojo as soon as I am alerted.

    Today in the second grade, we:
    • continued our unit on handwriting, completed our listening and speaking tips posters, and brainstormed topics for tomorrow's sharing time in language and spelling class
    • popcorn read "Henry and Mudge" and ordered the sequence of the story in reading and phonics class
    • worked with today's number (20) and practiced choosing reasonable answers to basic word problems in math class
    • practiced a few cooperative games and discussed how we can be cooperative members of our different communities in social studies class
    • previewed various measurement tools in science class
    • practiced our monthly song and poem and listened to a story during ECA




    Tonight's Homework:

    Complete Math Practice 1.3-1.4 (there will be a math quiz next Tuesday, August 25th on unit 1, chapter 1.)

    Today in the second grade, we:
    • practiced our monthly poem by creating synonyms for the adjectives and continued our unit on handwriting unit language and spelling class
    • worked with today's number (19) and estimated amounts through 50 in math class
    • brainstormed the different roles we and others have in social studies class
    • reviewed the eight inquiry skills (measure, observe, make a model, plan an investigation, predict, infer, compare, and classify) and went out to the playground to practice observing and comparing in science class
    • practiced our monthly song and started making good listening and speaking tips posters during ECA
