Monday, January 12th, 2015

Today in the second grade, we:
  • congratulated the students who made the honor roll, and discussed fidelity and what it means to be faithful in assembly
  • took our weekly spelling quiz and continued to work with comparative and superlative adjectives in language and spelling class
  • compared numbers in different forms (words, digits and models) in math class
  • wrote a paragraph using r-controlled vowels in reading and phonics class
  • compared and contrasted hills, plains, mountains, valleys, islands and peninsulas in social studies class
Tonight's homework:

Reading Response Journal (either the worksheet OR 8-10 sentences and a picture in your language notebook)

Starting next week, the reading response journal will alter every week, with the students all completing the same reading and either answering specific questions or guided to write in a specific style. I will give the students the reading and questions on Friday if they wish to get started during the weekend.

Next week's spelling words (for Monday, January 19th) will come from the social studies book Horizons pg. 100-111:
  1. geography
  2. American
  3. homebodies
  4. different
  5. fairyland
  6. castle
  7. serene
  8. breath
  9. freedom
  10. bark
  11. ocean
  12. desert
Every month, starting in February, I will increase the students' weekly spelling words by two, so that they will reach 20 words by May.

February: 14 words
March: 16 words
April: 18 words
May: 20 words

*Special Notes:
  • We will have a math quiz this Thursday (chapter 5) and a science quiz this Friday (Unit 4: Lesson 4.)
  • I have received almost everybody's elective preferences for the third quarter and lunch fee for the second semester. Thank you! If you haven't returned these items, please send them with your child to school tomorrow.
