Parent's Guide to Science Projects

The annual science fair will be held on April 23rd-24th. We will be working every week in class in preparation for the fair. This week the students were asked to begin forming partnerships and start thinking about their questions. We will finalize their partnerships and questions next week. Some parents have approached me wanting to know more about how they can assist their child during this time. I am glad that you want to be there for your child! Although I would like the students to work as independently as possible, your second-grade child will need your help as a guide, or a more knowledgeable other, during these coming two months.

Information on the Scientific Method
Science projects should follow the six-step scientific method. These steps are shown on the chart below.

Time Management
Help your child meet due dates by getting out your family calendar and marking the interim due dates. Block out times for trips to the library and other work time.

How to Help
To help, ask questions to help your child figure things out; don't just provide the answers. Open-ended questions, such as, "What else could you try to solve this?" or "What is stopping you from going on to the next step?” Sometimes just talking it out can help children get unstuck. If not, ask the teacher for help. Respect your child's independence in learning by helping at the right level.

Helping at the Right Level at Every Step
Project Step
Helping at the right level:
Going too far:
Ask a question.
- Discussing with your child whether a project idea seems practical
- Picking an idea and project for your child: A topic not of interest will turn into a boring project.
Do background research.
- Taking your child to the library
- Helping your child think of key words for Internet searches
- Doing an Internet search and printing out articles
Construct a hypothesis.
- Asking how the hypothesis relates to an experiment the child can do
- Writing the hypothesis yourself
Test the hypothesis by doing an experiment.
- Assisting in finding materials
- Monitoring safety (you should always observe any steps involving heat or electricity)
- Writing the experimental procedure
– Doing the experiment, except for potentially unsafe steps
- Telling your child step-by-step what to do
Analyze data and draw a conclusion.
- Asking how your child will record the data in a data table
- Reminding your child to tie the data back to the hypothesis and draw a conclusion
- Creating a spread sheet and making the graphs yourself, even if your child helps type in values
- Announcing the conclusion yourself
Communicate your results.
- If a presentation is assigned, acting as the audience
- If a display board is assigned, helping to bring it to school
- Writing any of the text on the display board
- Determining the color scheme and other graphic elements

Happy Sports Day!

Below are some snaps of the the four teams:

The grade two students did well during our sponsored mass. Thank you to the parents who brought their students early!

We spent the last 1.5 hours of class engaged in a social experiment. You can ask your child to see what they thought about it. I thought it was an interesting way to practice alternative communication and careful cooperation.

Tonight's homework:
  • Write spelling words five times and choose eight words to create sentences with (from Journeys pg. 254-255: tunnel, curled, height, direction, toward, healed, brag, tease, around, huge, amazing, passage, underground, forest, eagle, tail.)
  • Complete Journeys Practice Book pg. 110-113.

Wednesday, February 25th, 2015

Today in the second grade, we:
  • rehearsed for tomorrow's mass in the morning
  • defined and identified the sides and vertices found in plane shapes in math class
  • practiced doubling the consonant with certain suffixes (ex: nap = napped, napping) in reading and phonics class
  • identified and broke apart run-on sentences in language and spelling class
  • discussed the science fair and learned about a famous botanist in science class
  • defined "unique" and "culture" and discussed the cultures in our community and what we can learn from other cultures in social studies class
Happy Birthday, Ayrton and Nathan! Thanks to Ayrton's family for the yummy class treats!

They are both a delight to teach. I love how well Ayrton balances work and play-always giving everything he does his best effort! My days wouldn't be as interesting without Nathan's infinite curiosity about the world around him.

Tonight's homework:

The students have chosen partners for the science fair (groups of twos and threes) and were given time in class to formulate three ideas. The students were encouraged to find a topic that interest them (football, frogs, ice cream, etc....) and start asking questions with the W's (Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? Which?) For example: How does _____ affect ______? How much _____ is required to ____? To what extent does ____ affect ____? The students may have already finished their homework in class but were instructed to share their ideas and their partnerships with their parents. Please let me know if a partnership isn't possible. I will give the students plenty of time to work on their projects in class, but they will need to meet outside of school at least a couple of times to complete their project.

Special Notes:

*All of the grade two students arrived early today-thank you! I would greatly appreciate it if you could send your child to school early again tomorrow for the Mass. Thank you!

*The students need to wear their school uniform to school tomorrow and pack their P.E. pants or shorts. We will change after Mass. I have their sports day shirts and will distribute them tomorrow.

*I have stapled the 3rd quarter study guides for the major subjects into your child's assignment book.
