Friday, April 29th, 2016

Today in the second grade, we:
  • started off the morning by listening to and discussing our latest class story  (Tom's met the new neighbors... ) 
  • we then reviewed adjectives and created short stories using multiple sensory adjectives in preparation for our quiz on Tuesday in language and spelling class
  • after which we watched the video of Mickey and Rei's science experiment-well done, boys!
  • visited the grades 4, 5, 6 and 7 science fair booths to take notes and ask questions in science class 
 
Tonight's Homework:
  • Complete Journeys Practice Book pg. 112-113.
  • Complete the Think-Tac-Toe (in your child's language notebook.) The students are directed to choose three activities from the sheet. Please sign each activity they complete. All written work should be shown in your child's language notebook.
    The cartoon that the students were recommended to watch on the TTT is:

  • Read aloud for 15 minutes and have a parent sign your reading log.
  • Prepare for next Tuesday's (May 3rd) spelling quiz: knowledge, curious, motion, silence, illness, imitated, darkness, behavior, blind, deaf, obeys, safety, attention, buddy, station, speech, shocked, enormous, surprised, laughed (from Journeys pg. 412-472: "Helen Keller" and "Officer Buckle and Gloria.")
  • Prepare for next Tuesday's (May 3rd) language quiz on adjectives (Workbook Plus unit 7.)
Announcements:
  • There will be no school next Monday, May 2nd due to the worker's day holiday. Have a great long weekend!
  • The students brought home their pocket folders. Please send them back next Tuesday, May 3rd.

The students finished their first day of the science fair and did a great job!  The awards ceremony will be from 3:15-4 tomorrow.























Tonight's Homework:
  • Complete Math Practice 14.1-14.4.
  • Read aloud for 15 minutes and have a parent sign your reading log.  
Announcements:
  • Tomorrow is P.E. day. The students are encouraged to wear their sports day shirts to P.E.
  • There will be a language quiz on unit 7: adjectives next Tuesday, May 3rd.

Today in the second grade, we:
  • reviewed this week's target vocabulary and practiced combining sentences with adjectives (ex: The students are sweet. The students are funny. The students are sweet and funny.) in language and spelling class
  • visited the library to check out new books
  • worked with coin combinations and identifying which combinations are greater than or equal to one dollar in math class
  • learned about buildings around our community that are named after people in social studies class
  • continued to practice presenting our science fair projects during science class





















Tonight's Homework:
  • Practice your science fair presentation! Remember our good speaking tips:
    • Look at your listeners.
    • Move naturally.
    • Speak clearly and loudly.
    • Speak not too fast and not too slow.
  • Read aloud for 15 minutes and have a parent sign your reading log. 
Announcements:
The science fair begins tomorrow! There have been some changes to the schedule. Parents and other family members are welcome to come from 3:15-4. You are also welcome to stop by first thing in the morning if you want to help your child set up, but don't worry if you can't make it-I can help your child prepare their station.

Today in the second grade, we:
  • created a readers' theater of "Safety at Home," connecting the story to ourselves-by listing safety tips we know and acting them out like Gloria, to another text-and how the tips in "Safety at Home" are similar to and different from Officer Buckle's safety tips, and to the world-by creating some safety tips posters for our classroom in reading and phonics class
  • reviewed this week's target vocabulary and used the comparative and superlative forms of adjectives to write a story about being a stranger in a strange land, where everything is a different size, shape, and color in language and spelling class
  • practiced mental math and identified a quarter and a half dollar in order to find the value of a group of coins in math class
  • practiced presenting our science fair projects in front of each other in order to give and receive feedback during science class
  • practiced presenting our science fair projects in front of our reading buddies during ECA









Tonight's Homework:
  • Complete Social Studies Activity Book pg. 59.
  • Read aloud for 15 minutes and have a parent sign your reading log. 
  • Practice your science fair presentations.
Announcements:
  • Library day tomorrow: the children are reminded to bring their library books.
  • P.E. day tomorrow: the children are reminded to wear their P.E. uniforms.
