Friday, September 4th, 2015

Today in the second grade, we:
  • enjoyed a variety of fire safety related activities in the morning
  • reviewed hard and soft c and g sounds in preparation for our unit 1 quiz on Monday in reading and phonics class
  • reviewed our weekly target vocabulary, took turns sharing about our hobbies during our weekly sharing time, and continued our handwriting unit in language and spelling class
  • had our first dance class of the year!




































































Tonight's Homework:
  • Complete Journeys Practice Book pg. 9-10.
  • Complete the Think-Tac-Toe (in your child's assignment book.) The students are directed to choose three activities from the sheet. You can sign each activity they complete. All written work should be shown in your child's language notebook
    The cartoon that the students were recommended to watch on the TTT is:
    Postman Pat and the Pirate Treasure
  •  Read aloud for 15 minutes and have a parent sign your reading log.
  • Prepare for next Monday's (September 7th) spelling quiz: remembered, porch, crown, spend, stuck, visit, cousin, piano, family, Spanish (from Journeys pg. 34-35.)
  •  Prepare for next Monday's (September 7th) phonics quiz on unit 1: hard and soft c and g.

I sent your child's pocket folder home for you to look through. If you have any questions about the folders, please come visit me after school next week and we can talk! Please return the folder with your child next Monday, September 7th. I will be sending home the pocket folders periodically for you to look through. If you would like your child to bring it home at another time, just send me a message on Dojo and I'll pack it with your child. Thank you!

Today in the second grade, we:
  • added to our class story, practiced spotting the missing predicate in a sentence, and continued our unit on handwriting in language and spelling class
  • pair read "All in the Family" and discussed Camila's hobbies in comparison to our own in preparation for tomorrow's sharing time in reading and phonics class
  • worked with today's number (12) and practiced adding three numbers in any order in math class
  • reviewed the months of the Gregorian calendar in social studies class
  • reviewed the steps of the scientific method and worked on our question and hypothesis for our experiment in science class

Tonight's Homework:
  • Complete Math Practice pg. 2.2-2.6 (five pages).
  • Read aloud for 15 minutes and have a parent sign your reading log. 
  • Practice talking about your hobbies in front of your family. You will have 90 seconds in front of the class tomorrow during our weekly sharing time.  The students created an outline of what they want to present in their language notebooks.

    Remember to answer these questions:

    1. What are your hobbies? (Choose 2-3)
    2. Why do you like your hobbies?
    3. When did you start each hobby?

    You can also talk about who you do your hobbies with (alone or with others) and how often you do your hobbies (everyday, once a week, etc.).

  • Two announcements for tomorrow:

    Fire Safety Day begins at 9 a.m., and will include a variety of fire safety-related activities to teach the students about the safety measures to take if there was a fire.

    The mosquito sprayers are scheduled to come spray tomorrow at 4 p.m., unless it rains. Please pick up your child at 4 p.m. promptly tomorrow so that the fumigators can start protecting our school against dengue fever (and itchy mosquito bites in general!)
  • The students will begin their dance class tomorrow! G2 is combining with G3 this year to create a phenomenal, large cast of young dancers.

Today in the second grade, we:
  • started our first class story, focused on adding predicates to sentences, and continued our handwriting unit in language and spelling class
  • worked with today's number (11) and made a ten to find sums to 18 in math class
  • completed our map of DISK (complete with a map key and map symbols) and checked out and discussed different examples of changes, within ourselves and around us, in social studies class
  • prepared for our first science experiment by listing the steps that we would need to take in  science class
  • enjoyed a story and practiced our monthly class poem and song during ECA
The students are practicing their dribbling 
and passing skills in P.E.











Tonight's Homework:
  • Complete the seven measuring activities in your science notebook. 
  • Read aloud for 15 minutes and have a parent sign your reading log.

Today in the second grade, we:
  • previewed next week's spelling words, pair read and discussed "All in the Family" from Journeys, and practiced adding appropriate subjects and predicates to our writing in reading and phonics class
  • focused on the predicate, or action part of sentences, and continued our unit on handwriting in language and spelling class
  • worked with today's number (10) and worked on adding the ones digit to base 10 in math class
  • previewed our new chapter on the scientific method and listed the different steps to an experiment in science class
  • practiced our class song for September and poem* during ECA
    *The G2 poem for September is the Shel Silverstein poem, "Hug O' War":


Tonight's Homework:
  • Complete Social Studies Activity Book pg. 6-7.
  • Read aloud for 15 minutes and have a parent sign your reading log.

Thank you for your help in getting the reading logs off the ground! Several students came in to lass today talking about what they were reading. Chatting about what we're reading and learning is my favorite kind of chatter! I appreciate your support.
